100 Who Care: Helping us care for others
The Board of the Houston Galveston Institute invites you to join 100 Who Care by pledging $1,000 to underwrite the cost of indigent care.
Many of our clients pay on a sliding scale from $0-$85, with $85 being our cost. Of those on a sliding scale, 50% or more pay nothing. However, we do not want to turn them away!

Houston Galveston Institute (HGI) is a 40-year old, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which first opened its doors in 1978 in Galveston, before relocating the headquarters to Houston. Through the years, our therapists have been active in research and training, producing some of the most groundbreaking work and studies in family counseling in the nation. This work has propelled the organization to one of the most international and nationally recognized counseling, research and training facilities in America.
Our founder, Harlene Anderson, Ph.D., is highly recognized throughout the mental health industry – as a bestselling author and highly sought-after guest speaker around the world. HGI’s volunteer Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated community leaders, who govern the organization. HGI also has a volunteer Advisory Board comprised of members who are all actively involved in a number of different committees.
HGI’s daily operations are the responsibility of the executive director. The staff positions are supported, in part, by funds received from community donations, grants, and clients’ fees. Client fees add to the bottom line, even though we operate on a sliding scale for those who are unable to pay or do not have insurance coverage. The fund development director, with the fundraising committee, recruits volunteers and plans events. The grant writer handles grant writing and reporting. The degreed administrative assistant supports the executive director and handles social media. The degreed business manager is responsible for financial input, accounting, reporting, and human resources. All employees are provided with an organization handbook, with policies and procedures.
In support of our mission, HGI is proud of our 56-contract faculty, who are involved with teaching and research. HGI also hosts interns and doctoral students. This year we welcome nine Learners-Supervised Clinical Associates; four Learners-Masters Interns; three Learner-Doctoral Interns; one Clinical Associate. These students are from around Houston and around the world. Most of our interns and students return to HGI for additional training and research. HGI is also blessed to have numerous rotating volunteers, which help with different projects and support interns, office staff, faculty, and our speaker’s bureau and marketing.
HGI is on a calendar year, and financial management is handled in-house and maintained electronically. An independent CPA firm handles the required tax forms (990) and other required documentation. The revenue is planned to equal expenditures from private contributions, grants, and special events. The board of directors and staff are committed to continuing efforts to increase and diversify funding through various fundraising efforts, in order to meet the increasing demand for services for those in the low- to mid-income levels of Harris County. HGI also contracts with community agencies, such as the Harris County Domestic Relations Office (DRO) and Communities in Schools (CIS). HGI is continually building new partnerships throughout the community.
